Thysanothecium is a genus of two species (Kirk et al. 2001), included in the family Cladoniaceae (Stenroos et al. 2002c; Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2003). It was originally described from Australia and thought to be endemic there (Galloway 1977b), but it is now known to be more widely distributed in the Pacific (Galloway & Bartlett 1983; Stenroos 1988b; Sammy 1992; Hammer 2001b). Podetial morphogenesis in the genus is discussed in Hammer (2001b). Both species occur in New Zealand. Thysanothecium buchanani C.Knight (Knight 1881) is referable to Psoroma buchanani (C.Knight) Nyl.
