Endocarpon adscendens

E. adscendens (Anzi) Müll.Arg., Bull. rav. Soc. Murith Valais. 10: 58 (1894).

Dermatocarpon pusillum var. adscendens Anzi, Catal. Lich. Sondr.: 103 (1860).

Description : Thallus epilithic, squamose. Squamae appressed to ascending, concave to plane, contiguous to imbricate, elongate, lobate, radiating at margins. Lobes pale grey-brown to pale greenish brown, 0.35–0.65 mm wide, 0.1–0.15 mm thick, with a grey-black lower cortex, anchored by concolorous rhizohyphae. Perithecia immersed, 0.2–0.4 mm diam., apex rounded, overgrown by the thallus; ostiole depressed. Exciple with an inner hyaline layer and an outer dark brown layer, 20–25 μm thick near the apex. Periphyses 25–40 μm long. Asci 2-spored. 90–120 × 20–27 μm. Ascospores colourless, muriform, 36–51 × 16–24 μm.

N: Northland (Great I. Three Kings Is). On stones, rubble above beach. Known also from Europe, Scandinavia, SW USA, Thailand, Taiwan and Queensland (McCarthy 1995g, 2001d: 162, 2003c, 2006; Wolseley et al. 2002; Aptroot 2003a; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Santesson et al. 2004).

Cosmopolitan

Endocarpon adscendens is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; appressed to ascending, pale squamae; and the colourless, muriform ascospores, 36–51 × 16–24 μm.
