Fuscidea impolita

Description : Thallus thin, greyish, whitish or brownish, continuous to areolate. Medulla I+ blue to deep-violet. Apothecia immersed, black, to 0.5 mm diam. Exciple brown-black, 30–40 μm thick. Epithecium greyish brown to olive-grey. Hymenium colourless, 45–55 μm tall. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 9–14 × 6–8 μm. Conidia ellipsoidal, 2–4.5 × 1–2 μm.
Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.
C: (Mt Dumas, Mt Honey). Rock outcrops and feldmark. Known also from Tierra del Fuego (Hertel 1984b; Fryday 2000c).

Fuscidea impolita is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the thin, continuous thallus; absence of secondary chemical compounds; amyloid (I+ blue to deep violet) medulla; black, ±immersed apothecia; and ellipsoidal ascospores, 9–14 × 6–8 μm.
