Aderkomyces albostrigosus

Description : Thallus to 5 mm diam. (rarely to 8 mm diam.) continuous to slightly dispersed, 10–20 μm thick, furnished with erect, tapering white hairs, 0.6–1.0 mm long and to 0.04 mm diam., between the hairs smooth grey-green to grey or whitish, shining, smooth, without any spiny arms or thorns, cortical layer distinct. Prothallus very thin, grey or indistinct. Apothecia sessile, ±distinctly constricted at base, 0.2–0.35(–0.5) mm diam., 100–150 μm tall, urceolate, ±transparent; disc yellow or reddish yellow to dark-brown, epruinose, concave. Margins thick, smooth to somewhat uneven, concolorous with disc. Hypothecium colourless c. 10 μm thick. Hymenium 40–70 μm tall, colourless; epithecium indistinct (without algae). Paraphyses c. 1.5 μm diam., slightly branched and anastomosing. Asci clavate, 1-spored. Ascospores muriform, with numerous cells, ellipsoidal, 38–70 × 17–28 μm.
S: Marlborough (Pelorus Bridge). On branch of Pittosporum tenuifolium. First collected in New Zealand by Bill Malcolm (Malcolm 1995). Known also from Central America, South America, W Africa, Java, Fiji, New Caledonia and Australia (Santesson 1952; Lücking & Kalb 2001; McCarthy 2003c).

Aderkomyces albostrigosus is characterised by: the corticolous/foliicolous habit; thallus hairs smooth, without any spiny arms or thorns; pale-yellow to dark reddish brown apothecial discs, strongly constricted at base; 1-spored asci; and muriform ascospores, 38–70 × 17–28 μm.
