Thallus corticolous; branches ±erect, caespitose, 3–5 cm long
Thallus saxicolous; branches pendent or prostrate, 7–15(–20) cm long

Bryoria, comprising c. 50 species worldwide (Thell et al. 2004), is included in the family Parmeliaceae (Brodo & Hawksworth 1977; Kirk et al. 2001; Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005). The genus is recognised by its shrubby to vine-like or hair-like, mostly brown to black or greyish thalli, and ±terete branches with a loose interior surrounded by arachnoid medullary hyphae (Brodo & Hawksworth 1977; Swinscow & Krog 1988; Common 1991; Kärnefelt & Thell 1992; Goward 1999; Ryan 2002b). Two species are recorded from New Zealand (Jørgensen & Galloway 1983).
