Urtica membranacea

ζU. membranacea Poiret

ζU. membranacea Poiret ζ is known in N.Z. from only one early collection (CHR 5184, near Christchurch, rare). Allan (1940) recorded this specimen as U. pilulifera, however, the specimen is referable to U. membranacea. A monoecious annual, moderately clothed in stinging hairs and otherwise moderately hairy, with 2 entire stipules per node and unisexual racemes. ♂ racemes in upper part of stem and with axis of the infl. inflated; ♀ racemes in lower part of stem and with axis not inflated. The illegitimate name U. dubia Forsskal has been used until recently for this sp. (S. Europe, N. Africa, S.W. Asia, 1940).
