Lectotype: New Zealand. Northland, Anawhata, 3.ix.1933, L.M. Cranwell 114 – CHR 374329 [fide Galloway (1985a: 47)].

Description : Flora (1985: 47).

N: Northland (Anawhata), Auckland (Rangitoto I.). S: Canterbury (Banks Peninsula) on coastal rocks.

Endemic

Buellia cranwelliae is characterised by: the saxicolous habit (coastal rocks); the grey-white, areolate thallus; innate to sessile, scattered, black apothecia; a brown-black hypothecium; and biseriate, brown, ellipsoidal to oval or fabiform ascospores, 11–13 × 5–6 μm.
