Holotype: New Zealand. Otago, Goat Island near Dunedin, on coastal rocks, J.S. Thomson T 1044 [ZA 302] – W. Isotypes – CHR 374336, OTA.
Description : Flora (1985: 48).
S: Canterbury (Hawdon River), Otago (Otago Harbour). Inland from small stones on a roadside margin, and from coastal rocks. Recently reported also from subantarctic Marion I. (Øvstedal & Gremmen 2001: 555).

Buellia fuscoatratula is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; reddish brown to olivaceous, minutely roughened, mosaic-forming thallus, delimited by a marginal, black prothalline line; scattered, sessile, black apothecia, 0.5–0.8 mm diam.; a brown-black hypothecium; and biseriate, ellipsoidal to oval ascospores, 12–15 × 6–7 μm.
