Acarospora gyrodes

A. gyrodes H.Magn., Sv. Bot. Tidskr. 37: 278 (1943).

Holotype: New Zealand. Otago, Cromwell, on rocks near railway station, 17.iii.1927, G. Einar and Greta Du Rietz 2178a: 5 – UPS.

Description : Flora (1985: 2)

S: Canterbury and Central Otago. On stones and rocks in full sun. Associating with Acarospora otagensis, A. schleicheri and Caloplaca rubelliana.

Endemic

Acarospora gyrodes is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the effuse, areolate, pale greyish thallus; the dark reddish-brown apothecia with gyrose discs; and minute ascospores (100–200 per ascus), 3.5–5 × 1–1.5(–1.7) μm.
