Acarospora murorum
Description : Thallus of isolated to interlocking areolae, 0.5–5 mm diam., flat, irregularly angular, of similar size, red-brown or pale-brown. Apothecia immersed, 0.5–1 mm diam., 1–3 or more per areola, red-brown or dark-brown, disc matt, smooth to wrinkled, epruinose, always darker than thallus; thalline margine inconspicuous or absent. Hymenium 100–160 μm tall. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 6–13 × 3–6 μm.
Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.
S: Otago (Teviot Valley, Lake Onslow Road, Sutton Salt Lake). On friable soil of sunny clay banks. Associating with Caloplaca cirrochrooides, Cladonia squamules, etc. Known also from Great Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, Israel, (Magnusson 1929; Purvis et al. 1992; Nimis 1993; Santesson 1993; Coppins 2002b; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Temina et al. 2005).
Bipolar
Acarospora murorum is characterised by: the terricolous/saxicolous habit; angular, interlocking areolae, red-brown to pale-brown; immersed apothecia the disc epruinose, darker than thallus; ellipsoidal ascospores, 6–13 × 3–6 μm; and a negative chemistry.
