Calicium salicinum

Chemistry : Thallus K+ dull yellow, C−, KC+ dull yellow-orange; containing norstictic acid. Pruina K+ forming violet-red feather-like or plate-like crystals.
N: South Auckland (Mamaku Plateau to Taupo), Gisborne (Mt Hikurangi), Hawke's Bay (Napier–Taupo Road near Tarawera), Wellington (Turangi to Tararua Ra.). S: Nelson (Cobb Valley to Lake Rotoiti), Marlborough (Mt Fyffe), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass to Maclennan's Bush near Methven), Otago (Makarora to Owaka), Southland (Forest Hill). On lignum of beech (Nothofagus menziesii, N. solandri), more rarely on Fuchsia excorticata, Podocarpus totara (also on bark) and Leptospermum scoparium, 150–940 m. Known also from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and South Africa (Tibell 1987, 1998a, 1999c, 2001b, Kalb 1991; Aptroot 2002e; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Tibell & Thor 2003; Hermansson & Pystina 2004; Tibell & Ryan 2004a; Titov et al. 2004).

Calicium salicinum is characterised by: the brown pruina on the lower side of the capitulum; the small, spirally striated spores; and the K+ yellow thallus.
