Calicium tricolor

Calicium cryptocroceum. Holotype: New Zealand. Canterbury, 9.5 km SSE of Arthur's Pass, Bealey Spur, along track to Grassmere Hut, 43º02's, 171º35'E, 1980, L. Tibell 10084 – UPS. Isotypes in BC, BM, CANL, CHR, COLO, DUKE, H, HMAS, LD, LE, LWU, M, MEL, MICH, MIN, NICH, O, POZ, S, TNS, UPS, US, W, Herb. K. Kalb, Herb. A Vězda.

Description : Flora (1985: 56 – as Calicium cryptocroceum). See also Tibell (1987: 54–55).

Chemistry : Thallus K+ dull yellow, C+ orange, KC+ orange to red, Pd−, UV+ dark-orange; containing arthothelin and thiophanic acid (Tibell 1987).

N: Northland (Omahuta State Forest), South Auckland (Coromandel Peninsula to Taupo), Gisborne (Mt Hikurangi to Lake Waikaremoana), Hawke's Bay (Kaweka Ra., Black Birch Ra.), Taranaki (Kaitake Ra.), Wellington (Kaimanawa Ra. to Tararua Ra.). S: Nelson (Kaihoka Lakes to Lake Rotoroa), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass to near Methven), Otago (Catlins), Southland (Longwood Ra., Wilmot Pass). On lignum of beech from s.l. to 1370 m, preferring higher altitudes in more northern areas. Known also from Australia, Mexico and South America (Tibell 1987, 1998a; Kalb 1991; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Calicium tricolor is characterised by: its pale straw yellow, C+ orange thallus, and distinctive white, PD+ yellow to red pruina.
