Urochloa panicoides

ξU. panicoides P.Beauv. ξLow-growing, 15-30 cm, spreading from rosette-like base, rooting at lower nodes. Leaf-sheath ciliate on margins. Ligule a densely ciliate rim. Leaf-blade soft, light green, with scattered short hairs; margins crimped, with a few longer hairs. Panicle of 2-4 racemes, 2-3 cm. Spikelets shortly pedicelled, 2-flowered, in 2 secund rows on flattened rachis. Lower glume < 1 mm, hyaline; upper c. 4-5 mm, herbaceous, = spikelet. Lower floret: lemma similar to upper glume but flattened, nerves anastomosing below apex. Upper floret: lemma finely, transversely rugose. This tropical annual sp. from South Africa, India and Mauritius has been collected from one locality, Auckland City, One Tree Hill, 5 Korokino Road, growing in waste land beside house A. E. Wright 2658 21.4.1978 (AK 144229; duplicate CHR 339914); it was still there at the same site eleven years later A. E. Wright 8853 12 Mar 1989 (AK 183947; duplicate CHR 450085).
