BROMEAE

Annuals or perennials. Ligule membranous. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets of several-many ⚥ florets, with Ø florets above, laterally compressed; rachilla prolonged. Glumes < lowest lemma, persistent. Lemma ± bidentate with straight or recurved apical awn, or awn 0. Palea 2-keeled. Stamens (2)-3. Ovary with a terminal, fleshy, lobed, hairy appendage; styles 2, subterminal. Caryopsis narrowly ellipsoid to linear, hollowed on hilar face, adherent to lemma and palea; hilum linear, as long as caryopsis.
