Var. coerulea

* Var. coerulea (L.) Gouan, Fl. Mons.  30  (1765)

(C.J.W., D.R.G.)

blue pimpernel

Corolla blue; margin distinctly crenulate.

N.; S.: coastal and lowland areas, at least as far south as Canterbury, but rare south of Nelson.

Europe, Asia Minor 1904

 Var. coerulea has a scattered distribution and often grows with  var. arvensis in the same habitats but is but nearly always much less common. The blue pimpernel has been confused here and overseas with A. foemina Miller because the latter has similar blue fls. A. foemina is widespread in Europe, including the British Isles. However, unlike  var. coerulea, A. foemina has almost glandless corolla lobes and the pedicels are shorter and rarely exceed the lvs.
