Plants tufted or tussock-forming. Inflorescence varying from a single spikelet to a small panicle, or large plumose panicle. Spikelets 2-several-flowered, florets ⚥ or unisexual; disarticulation above glumes and between florets. Glumes 2, persistent, well-developed. Lemma entire to sinus, entire or lobed above, with a straight or geniculate awn from tip or sinus, or awnless. Lodicules 2, hair-tipped. Fruit a caryopsis or rarely an achene.
