Chewings fescue

Caespitose, rhizomes not formed but aerial stems with few short internodes; culms » leaves; panicle 10-30 cm, widely branched, branches naked below; spikelets 9-12 mm; anthers usually 3 mm.

N.; S.: throughout. Often in pastures and semi-natural grasslands but on riverbeds, in waste places and roadsides.

Imperfectly gathered specimens may be difficult to distinguish from subsp. rubra.
