ξMilium effusum L.,wood millet ξPlant loosely tufted, to 75 cm, with dull green, soft, flat leaves. Leaf-sheath glabrous. Ligule 4-5 mm, glabrous. Leaf-blade 15-20 cm × 10 mm, abaxially sparsely, finely scabrid on ribs, adaxially smooth; margins finely scabrid, tip acute. Culm erect, or geniculate at base, internodes glabrous. Panicle 15-20 cm, very lax, nodding; branches filiform, spreading to deflexed, bearing few spikelets near tip. Spikelets c. 2.5 mm, awnless, pale green, becoming whitish, elliptic or ovate-elliptic. Glumes equalling spikelets, membranous, 3-nerved, glabrous, acute. Lemma c. 2 mm, finely 5-nerved, rounded, coriaceous, glabrous, shining, becoming brown. Palea ≈ lemma and similar in texture. Anthers not seen. Caryopsis c. 1.5 × 1 mm. A species indigenous to Eurasia and North America, known from one collection CHR 143507A,B A. J. Healy & I. Fryer 63/115 "Otahuna" Tai Tapu, Canterbury, 26.2.1963.
