Annual, biennial or perennial herbs, glabrous or nearly so but lvs often tuberculate above, usually glaucous. Fls in terminal, bracteate, scorpioid cymes. Calyx deeply 5-lobed, irregular, accrescent. Corolla ± tubular, generally bicoloured, less commonly wholly yellow; lobes 5, erect or recurved, < tube; throat lacking scales or hairs. Stamens 5, inserted at c. middle of tube; anthers with basal tail, included or slightly exserted. Style exserted. Nutlets 2 (really 2 fused pairs).
