Juncus holoschoenus R.Br.

J. holoschoenus R. Br. Prodr. 1810, 259.

Tufted perennial to c. 45 cm high; rhizome short. Stems ± terete, internal transverse septa lacking or barely discernible. Leaves terete or slightly compressed, transversely-septate across whole width. Inflorescence compact with a few large flower-clusters, or more open with many clusters. Stamens 6. Capsules c. 4.5 mm long, ± = tepals, triquetrous, somewhat tapered.

N. Scattered. S. Canterbury - Christchurch (1864), Selwyn River (1955), Chaneys (1978). Damp places. (Australia)

J. holoschoenus could be confused only with J. prismatocarpus and J. fockei; it differs from the former in having 6 (not 3) stamens, and leaves with transverse septa only; from the latter in the longer capsule ± = tepals and only slightly tapered towards the top. Stems of J. holoschoenus usually lack transverse septa in the upper part, but occasionally have minute, barely discernible ones.
