Description : Flora : (1985: 192).

N: S: Malborough (Raglan Ra.), Canterbury (Craigieburn Ra., Cooper's Rock Banks Peninsula, Mt Hutt, Mt Peel), Otago (Ocean Peak Humboldt Mts, Sugarloaf Saddle, Bedford Valley Forbes Ra., Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Pisa Ra., Old Man Ra., Hawkdun Ra. Mt Pisgah Kakanui Ra., Rock & Pillar Ra., Breakneck Rd. Herbert, Silver Peak, Swampy Summit, Flagstaff Hill, Mt Cargill Dunedin, Lee Stream, Maungatua), Southland (Pukerau, Homer). St: (Tin Ra.). In leaf litter in cushion vegetation, tussock grassland, on rock, Dracophyllum scrub. Known also from Australia (Elix 1980, 1992; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Hypogymnia lugubris var. compactior is characterised by: the crowded, densely and often irregularly branched, narrow lobes (1–3 mm wide), that commonly have brownish apices (both above and below); the black lines or variegations common in var. lugubris, are rare or absent in var. compactior.
