Lecidella granulosa

L. granulosa (Nyl.) Knoph & Leuckert, Herzogia 14: 9 (2000).

Lecidea granulosa Nyl. in J. Crombie, J. Bot. 14: 21 (1876).

Description : Thallus crustose, in patches to 5 cm diam., areolate, areolae to 1 mm diam., 0.1–0.5 mm thick, grey-white to yellowish beige, matt, delimited at margins by a narrow, grey-black to black prothallus. Apothecia scattered to crowded, 0.5–0.8 mm diam., sessile to subimmersed; disc black, flat to subconvex, proper margin narrow, to 0.05 mm thick. Epithecium green to olive-brown, 7– 15 μm thick. Hymenium colourless, 55–70 μm tall. Hypothecium colourless. Paraphyses to 2 μm thick, apically to 4.5 μm thick. Asci clavate, 50–55 × 15–18 μm. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 10–13 × 6– 7 μm. Pycnidia immersed, globose, 60–80 μm diam. Conidia filiform, slightly curved, 14–20 × 1 μm.

Chemistry : Thallus K+ yellow or −, C−, KC+ orange-red, KC−, Pd yellow or −; containing chodatin, demethylchodatin, atranorin, isoarthothelin, thiophanic acid and 2,5,7-trichloro-3- O -methylnorlichexanthone with aotearone (Knoph 1990: 89; Knoph & Leuckert 1997).

N: Auckland (Kawakawa Bay). On coastal rocks (Knoph 1990: 91). Known also from Europe, Turkey, South Africa, North America, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Chile (including Juan Fernandez) and Australia (Rambold 1989; Knoph 1990; Knoph et al. 1995a: 48, fig. 2 – as Lecidella chodati; Knoph & Leuckert 2000: 11, fig. 3; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Knoph & Leuckert 2004).

Cosmopolitan

Lecidella granulosa is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the grey-white to yellowish beige thallus (KC+ orange-red), delimited at margins by a narrow, grey-black prothallus; scattered, black apothecia, 0.5–0.8 mm diam.; a colourless hypothecium; and ascospores 10–13 × 6–7 μm.
