Polypodium L.

POLYPODIUM L.

Terrestrial, rupestral, or epiphytic ferns with creeping scaly rhizomes. Fronds articulated to rhizome, pinnatifid or 1-pinnate, usually glabrous; veins free or anastomosing. Sori round to elongate, superficial, lacking indusia. Spores monolete.

c. 150 spp., almost cosmopolitan. Naturalised sp. 1.

Although numerous N.Z. ferns have been placed in Polypodium these are now all relegated to other genera, some of which have only distant affinity with Polypodium sens. strict.
