Picea abies
ζ*P. abies (L.) Karsten ζ*, Norway spruce, has been collected wild on White Horse Hill, Mt Cook National Park, where it had spread to a very limited extent from planted trees. The resinous smell of Norway spruce lvs when crushed contrasts with the very sweet smell of Sitka spruce and the lvs are only moderately flattened. Norway spruce is commonly cultivated and several forms are grown. Like Sitka spruce it is more successful in colder parts of both main islands, probably, to some extent, because of the lesser severity of attack by spruce aphid, Elatobium abietinum. (N. and C. Europe, 1957).
