Bulbinella gibbsii var. balanifera L.B.Moore
Type locality: Upper Hollyford Valley. Type: CHR 148426, A. M. Buchanan, 1964.
Plants to 50–60 cm. tall. Peduncle us. long. Pedicels long, much exceeding bracts. Ovary and capsule barrel-shaped, narrowing gradually towards base but scarcely stipitate. 2n = 14.
DIST.: N., southern Ruahine Range, Tararua Range. S., mountains of Fiordland and to Arthur's Pass, in relatively well-drained habitats.
FL. 1–2. FT. 2–6.
It is doubtful whether either var. is strictly dioec. Most anthers have pollen but in some racemes only an occ. fl. sets fr. (Moore, loc. cit. fig. 1) while in others a full head of fr. ripens. Laing and Gourlay (T.R.S.N.Z. 64, 1934, 5) record the Arthur's Pass plant as having "polygamo-dioecious flowers".
