Candelariella is a cosmopolitan genus of some 45 species (Kirk et al. 2001), well developed in polar and cold temperate regions, and included in the family Lecanoraceae (Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005). Species are characterised by the production of pulvinic acid derivatives giving thalli a characteristic yellow colour that is K−; by Candelaria -type asci; and a preference for nitrogen-rich susbstrata. The genus is discussed by Hakulinen (1954); James (1971); Thomson (1973); Harris & Buck (1978); Filson (1992a); James & Gilbert (1992); Tønsberg (1992); Nimis (1993) and Westberg (2004). Antarctic taxa are discussed by Castello & Nimis (1994) and Øvstedal & Lewis Smith (2001: 149–151). Galloway & Hafellner (2002) recently reported C. subdeflexa from southern New Zealand. Six species are here recorded from New Zealand.
