S: Marlborough (d'Urville I., Chetwode Is), Canterbury (Christchurch City), Otago (Anderson's Bay, Dunedin, Green Island, Pounawea), Southland (Bluff). St: (Herekopere I., Islet Cove Port Pegasus). On smooth bark of trees, Crataegus, Ligustrum, Myrsine australis, Weinmannia racemosa, on lowland and coastal forest and scrub, and on trees in urban streets and parks in sites having moderate to heavy pollution (Johnson et al. 1998). Known also from Western Samoa and Tasmania (Kantvilas & James 1991: 280; Elix & McCarthy 1998; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Opegrapha agelaeoides is characterised by: the corticolous habit; prominent, black, unbranched lirellae, 0.5–2 mm long, 0.3 mm wide and with convergent lips; fusiform, 6–7-septate ascospores, (20–)30–36(–44) × 5–9(–12) μm.
