Bacidina phacodes

Bacidia phacodes Körb., Parerg. Lich.: 130 (1860).

Description : Thallus whitish to grey-green, thin to irregularly warted or mealy. Apothecia 0.2–0.5 mm diam., whitish, beige or pale orange-pink, true exciple paler than disc, flat to convex, often confluent and clustered. Hymenium 35–50 μm tall, colourless or pale yellow-brown in upper parts, I+ blue. Paraphyses simple, 1–1.5 μm diam., apices to 3 μm wide. Hypothecium colourless. Ascospores acicular, 3–5(–7)-septate, 25–45 × 1.5–2 μm.

N: Auckland (Waitakere Ra.). On leaves of shrubs in damp coastal bush (Bartlett 1988: 4). A predominantly corticolous species, known also from Great Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, Morocco, Israel, Ukraine, North America (Vězda 1991; Purvis et al. 1992; Nimis 1993; Santesson 1993; Esslinger & Egan 1995; Egea 1996; Galun & Mukhtar 1996; Kondratyuk 1996; Kondratyuk et al. 1996b; Diederich & Sérusiaux 2000;Llop & Hladun 2000; Scholz 2000; Hafellner & Türk 2001; Llimona & Hladun 2001; Coppins 2002b; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Santesson et al. 2004).

Bacidina phacodes is characterised by: the foliicolous habit; the whitish to grey-green, mealy thallus; small, pale apothecia, 0.2–0.5 mm diam.; and acicular, 3–5(–7)-septate ascospores, 25–45 × 1.5–2 μm.
