Buellia alutacea is characterised by: the saxicolous habit (coastal rocks); the pustular-verruciform, buff-yellow to ochraceous, occasionally white-pruinose, areolate thallus without a marginal prothallus; I− medulla; sessile black apothecia (0.3–0.8 mm diam.), often grey-pruinose; 1-septate, ellipsoidal ascospores, 14–16 × 8–9 μm.
