Haematomma nothofagi
Description : Thallus whitish or creamish white, indeterminate to granular–effuse, sometimes areolate 5–15(–30) mm diam., in irregular patches, without soredia or prothallus. Apothecia prominent, scattered, sessile round to irregular, 0.2–0.8(–1.5) mm diam., thalline exciple poorly developed to ±lacking; disc plane to subconvex, matt, orange-red, to dull reddish brown, the colour extending in places to the margin. Ascospores sigmoid, colourless, 8–16(–18)-septate, spirally arranged in ascus, (40–)55–70(–80) × (4–)4.5–5.5 μm.
Chemistry : Atranorin, russulone, placodialic acid (Staiger & Kalb 1995).
N: Gisborne (Mt Hikurangi), Taranaki (Manganui Gorge, North Egmont, along Veronica Walk). S: Southland (Rainbow Reach, Waiau River, S Mavora Lake, West Dome). On bark of Nothofagus, still very poorly collected and undoubtedly much more widespread in New Zealand. Known also from southern Argentina, southern Chile and E Australia (Staiger & Kalb 1995; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Elix 2004a).

Haematomma nothofagi is a very small, rather inconspicuous corticolous species characterised by: the small, cinnabar-red apothecial discs virtually lacking a thalline exciple, the red colour extending ±right to the margins of the discs.
