Anzia jamesii

A. jamesii D.J.Galloway, N. Z. J. Bot. 16: 263 (1978).

Holotype: New Zealand. Southland, Lake Te Anau, Middle Fiord, near entrance to glow-worm caves by lake shore, on trunk of Nothofagus menziesii, xii.1962, P.W. James – BM.

Description : Flora (1985: 7–8).

Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla: K−, C+ red, PD−; containing atranorin, anziaic acid (major) and 4- O -methylhypoprotocetraric acid (minor).

N: Hawke's Bay (Ball's Clearing). S: Nelson (Lake Rotoiti) to Fiordland. St: (Ulva I.). Rare and local although in some places (e.g. Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes National Park) it can be abundant and well developed. A shade-tolerant species epiphytic on Nothofagus, Dacrycarpus and Cordyline, s.l. to 300 m.

Anzia jamesii is characterised by: the corticolous habit; broad, ±flattened lobes (0.5–2 mm wide), white-pruinose at their apices; stout isidia; and anziaic acid (C+ red) in the medulla. Differences between A. jamesii and A. entingiana are outlined above.
