Holotype: New Zealand. Southland, Yerex Creek, Te Anau, on Nothofagus bark, c. 200 m, G. Degelius NZ–469 – UPS.
Description : Flora (1985: 271)
Chemistry : Cortex K−; medulla K−, C+ rose, KC+ rose, Pd−; containing gyrophoric acid.
N: Taranaki (Inglewood on Photinia), Wellington (Hihitahi Forest N of Taihape). S: Canterbury (Boyle River), Otago (Hunter Valley), Southland (Te Anau). On bark of southern beech (Nothofagus) and introduced shrubs. Still rather poorly collected.

Melanelia glabratuloides is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the thin, rather delicate thallus; the slightly compressed isidia; gyrophoric acid in the medulla; and the absence of cortical hairs.
