Chemistry : Cortex K−, HNO3-; medulla K−, C+ rose. KC+ rose-red. Pd−; containing gyrophoric acid, 5- O -methylhiascic acid and traces of unidentified compounds.
N: Gisborne (Mt Hikurangi), Wellington (Tongariro National Park, Rimutaka Forest Park). S: Nelson (Springs Junction), Canterbury (Boyle River). On bark of mountain, silver and red beech, often at forest margins. Also in Tasmania (Elix 1994j; Kantvilas et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006) and southern South America (Esslinger 1977b, 1986b; Galloway & Quilhot 1999; Calvelo & Liberatore 2001).

Melanelia subglabra is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the pale olive-brown to reddish brown thallus; presence of soredia; and lack of cortical hairs.
