Coccocarpia, included in the monogeneric family Coccocarpiaceae (Arvidsson 1992; Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005), comprises 21 species (Kirk et al. 2001) occurring in both tropical and temperate areas. It appears to have two main areas of speciation, one in the northern part of South America, and one in SE Asia (Arvidsson 1983). East African species are discussed by Swinscow & Krog (1988), Australian species by Arvidsson (1992) and Sonoran Desert species by Arvidsson & Nash (2002). Three species occur in New Zealand (Arvidsson & Galloway 1979; Arvidsson 1983, 1992). The monospecific genus Vischia C.W.Dodge (Dodge 1971: 466) described on material from Sugarloaf at Cass, and named for Max Visch, was shown to be conspecific with Coccocarpia (Arvidsson 1983: 39).
