As for var. vermicularis but differing in the following respects: the thallus is chalk-white and never turns pinkish on storage, the medulla contains baeomycesic and squamatic acids and fluoresces golden yellow in UV.
S: St Arnaud Ra. (Nelson) to Mt Maungatua (Otago). St: Mt Anglem. On soil or amongst mosses and grass in alpine herbfield or fellfield. Rare.
Cosmopolitan
A minute fraction of the population of Thamnolia in New Zealand is var. subuliformis [Sato Bryologist 68: 324 (1965)]. This variety is much more common in the Northern Hemisphere.
