*Laestadia coccocarpiae Pat., Bull. Soc. Mycol. Fr. 24: 10 (1908).

*Guignardia coccocarpiae (Pat.) Sacc. & Trotter, Syll. Fung. 22: 76 (1913).

Description : Lichenicolous, parasitising species of Degelia. Perithecia black, immersed in host thallus, solitary to clustered, oval to pyriform, 200–400 μm wide and 250–450 μm tall. Periphyses septate, simple to slightly branched, not anastomosing, apices brown-pigmented, lumina 1–3 μm wide. Interascal filaments septate, unbranched or only very slightly branched. Asci functionally unitunicate, cylindrical, thick-walled, (4–)8-spored, 80–105 × 9– 16 μm. Ascospores mostly simple, occasionally 1-septate, ellipsoidal, hyaline at first becoming brownish, wall smooth to minutely wrinkled, (9–)12(–18) × (6–)8(–11) μm.

S: Nelson (Speargrass Flat, Maruia Valley), Westland (Lake Brunner, Kelly's Creek – on Degelia duplomarginata), Canterbury (Nina Valley), Otago (Leith Valley, Tautuku – on D. gayana). St: (Butterfield's Beach, Table Hill). In moist, humid, high-rainfall habitats close to the Main Divide, and in lowland, coastal forest. Known also from Chile (Matzer & Hafellner 1990: 70; Galloway & Quilhot 1999).

Austral

Hosts : Degelia duplomarginata, D. durietzii, D. gayana.

Illustrations : Matzer & Hafellner (1990: 68, fig. 7): Matzer & Pelzmann (1991: 8, figs 6–8).

* Roselliniella coccocarpiae is characterised by: the lichenicolous habit; the Degelia host; simple or rarely 1-septate ascospores, smooth-walled to minutely wrinkled, colourless at first and becoming brownish at maturity, 9–18 × 6–11 μm. Anatomical differences between New Zealand and Chilean populations, and between different host taxa, are discussed in Matzer & Hafellner (1990: 69).
