Fellhanera bouteillei

Description : Flora (1985: 75 – as Catillaria bouteillei).

Chemistry : Usnic acid, isousnic acid, asemone and zeorin (Lücking et al. 1994; Spier et al. 2002).

N: South Auckland to Wellington. S: Nelson to Southland. On leaves of ferns and Podocarpus totara (Santesson 1952). Commonly with other foliicolous lichens such as Badimiella sérusiauxii and Porina rubrofusca. Recently recorded from Queensland and Tasmania (McCarthy et al. 2001; McCarthy 2003c, 2006). Known also from Italy, Brazil, South Africa, Réunion, New Caledonia, Mexico and southern South America (Santesson 1952; Lücking & Kalb 2001; Aptroot 2002e; Lücking et al. 2003; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Rønhede et al. 2003; Farkas 2004; Herrera-Campos et al. 2004).

Fellhanera bouteillei shows very variable thallus and apothecial morphology. Thallus colour ranges from pale bluish grey to almost white and the surface texture from farinose to almost smooth or coarsely granular. Apothecia are usually thin, but may also be thicker and raised above thallus surface. Disc colour varies from pale yellowish almost translucent to vivid orange-yellow. The margins are often irregular and concolorous with disc or whitish. The outer surface of the exciple is often covered with crystals (Lücking 1997c).
