Lecania A.Massal.

LECANIA Massal., 1853

Thallus crustose. Photobiont green, Trebouxia. Apothecia lecanorine, thalline margin excluded at an early stage and mature fruits appearing lecideine. Paraphyses free. Ascospores colourless, ellipsoid to fusiform, 1- to 3-septate, 8-16 per ascus.

Lecania, included in the family Lecanoraceae is a widespread temperate genus of c. 90 species. It is distinguished from Lecanora (simple spores), Haematomma (elongate, multi-septate spores) and Brigantiaea (muriform spores) on spore characters as well as on the colour and texture of the apothecial disc. The genus is poorly understood and collected in New Zealand. Two species are recorded.
