Carex druceana var. astonii (Hamlin) Edgar

Var. astonii (Hamlin) Edgar comb. nov. C. Hamlin in Rec. Dom. Mus., Wellington 6, 1968, 102.

Type: WELT, 2042, Kaimanawa Mts, 1,150 m., Jan., 1911, Herb. B. C. Aston.

Lvs 0.7–1.2 mm. wide. Lower spikes us. distant and upper spikes approximate, but sts all spikes close-packed. Awn of glume up to 0.5 mm. long, rarely to 1 mm. long. Utricles c. 2.0 × 1.0–1.3 mm.

DIST.: N. Kaimanawa and Ruahine Ranges.

On river flats, 900–1,200 m. altitude.

C. druceana resembles C. petriei in its reddish, cirrhose-tipped lvs but the distinctive wide sheaths of C. petriei are lacking in C. druceana. The lvs of C. petriei are more rigid than those of C. druceana, the glumes more membr., and the utricles are us. almost black except on the beak and stipe whereas utricles of C. druceana are light-coloured below and darker towards the tip.
