Athyrium Roth

ATHYRIUM Roth

Terrestrial ferns. Rhizomes erect to long-creeping, scaly. Fronds 1-3-pinnate, scaly at least on stipes; veins free. Sori round or usually elongate, on one side of a vein, sometimes also developed distally on the second side. Indusia reniform, elongate or hook-shaped, attached laterally, opening towards midrib. Spores monolete.

Over 100 spp., mainly N. temperate. Naturalised sp. 1.

Two native spp., A. australe and A. japonicum, were previously included in this genus, but are now referred to Diplazium and Deparia respectively [Kato, M., Bot. Mag. Tokyo 90 : 23-40 (1977)]. The single naturalised sp. can be recognised by its hook-shaped indusia (Fig. 3).
