Annual to perennial; stems trailing to suberect, up to 50 cm long in water. Fls usually solitary. Seeds shiny, smooth.

N.: Volcanic Plateau, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Wellington; S.: throughout; St.; A., C.

Also indigenous to northern cool temperate, montane tropical, and subantarctic regions.

Streams, swamps, flushes, riverbanks and beds, bogs, pools, lakeshores.
