Urtica dioica L. subsp. dioica

*Subsp. dioica

Densely hairy perennial. Lvs ovate, cordate at base, 6-16-(20) cm long. Petiole up to ⅔ as long as lamina. Stipules 6-20 mm long. Racemes 2-5 cm long.

N.: scattered localities throughout but not collected from Northland or Hawke's Bay, local; S.: Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Kaitangata (Clutha R.), Invercargill; St.: Port Pegasus.

Waste places, cultivated land, grassland.

Perennial nettle is generally much stouter than the common nettle and also distinguished by the rhizomatous habit, sometimes forming large and persistent colonies.
