Original localities: "Northern Island. East Coast and base of Tongariro, Colenso". Lectotype: WELT, 22080, Colenso 195; isotype at K.

Culms (1)–2–7–(25) cm. long, < 0.5 mm. diam. Lvs >, = or < culms. Infl. of 1–(3) spikelets. Spikelets (3.5)–4–5–(7) mm. long. Glumes subacute, us. dark brown to almost black. Nut 1.5–2 mm. long, yellow-brown.

DIST.: N. Inland on Mt Egmont, Kaimanawa Range, and Volcanic Plateau; coastal at Karikari Bay, North Auckland, in Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa. S. Nelson, Canterbury, South Westland, Otago and Southland; coastal and inland. St.

In damp sand near coast, inland on boggy ground or sandy lake margins to 900 m. altitude.

S. moorei Kirk : "remarkable saline springs, Glenburn, East Coast [North Island]. Forming large masses in the immediate vicinity of the springs". Lectotype: WELT, 20473, T. Kirk, 2nd Feb. 1880; isotypes at AK and K. The specimens resemble var. concinnus in number of spikelets, size of spikelets and width of culm, but are much taller than usual, the culms being 10–25 cm. long. WELT 20502, "Wellington (S. Coast), E. of heads, D.P. [Petrie] Jan., 1894" is very like Kirk's specimens from Glenburn.
