Piptatherum P.Beauv., 1812

Type species: P. coerulescens (Desf.) P.Beauv.

Perennial. Leaf-blade flat or involute. Inflorescence a lax or contracted panicle. Spikelets ± compressed dorsally. Glumes subequal, 3-5-nerved. Lemma obscurely 3-5-nerved, coriaceous or membranous, with a caducous terminal awn. Palea ≈ lemma but narrower. Callus very small. Stamens 3.

c. 25 spp. from eastern Mediterranean to south-western Asia. Naturalised sp. 1.
