Var. hydrophila

Var. hydrophila (Petrie) Cheesem. Man. N.Z. Fl. 1906, 195.

Type locality: "Between the pyramids, Otago peninsula". Type: W, B. C. Aston 8/3/1896.

Patches us. < 5 cm. diam.; stems capillary. Petioles capillary, up to ± 4 cm. long; lamina not > c. 5 mm. diam.; lflts ± 2.5 mm. diam., obovate-cuneate, subsessile, teeth 0-2-(3). Umbels 1-2-(3)-fld on capillary peduncles up to 2.5 cm. long, Fls sessile or nearly so, c. 1·5 mm. diam. Mericarps (1)-1·5-(3) mm. diam., subacute on dorsal edge.

DIST.: N., S. Local from lower Waikato R. southwards.

In W (Herb. Petrie) are three matted pieces labelled: "Hydrocotyle tripartita R. Br. var. subpilosa  var. nov . Te Whaiti . . . Mid Jan. 1920. Moist sandy flats by river. D. Petrie." The specimens are barren. Petioles with long retrorse to patent hairs, especially at sinus; lamina ± 4 mm. diam. with sparse hairs and ± dense minute papillae, deeply lobed to 3-foliolate, crenately toothed to entire. The status deserves fuller study.
