Dipsacus sativus
ζ*D. sativus (L.) Honck. ζ*, fuller's teasel, is known from only one recent collection, a casual in garden, Picton, Marlborough. Similar in habit to D. sylvestris, but easily distinguished by the ± patent, lanceolate-subulate involucral bracts much < capitulum, the receptacular scales with a rigid recurved apical spine = floret, and the upper cauline lvs which are crenate-dentate. Floras differ considerably in the way they treat fuller's teasel; it is not known anywhere as a native plant and is often treated as a form of the wild teasel. Hansen, A., in Fl. Europ. 4: 59 (1976), suggested that it may be derived from D. ferox Lois. The sp. has been previously recorded in N.Z. as D. fullonum. (Origin uncertain, 1922).
