Acarospora veronensis

A. veronensis A.Massal., Ric. Auton. Lich. Crost: 29 (1852).

Description : Thallus of scattered to contiguous groups of rounded to angular, sublobulate, flat to convex, matt or glossy, dark red-brown areolae, 0.2–1.5 mm diam. Apothecia numerous, 0.1–0.5 mm diam., 1–3 per areola, with a concave, rounded, oval or elongate, brown-black disc and an inconspicuous thalline margin. Epithecium yellow-brown to dark-brown, 10–15 μm thick. Hymenium 60–100 μm tall. Ascospores minute, 3–5 × 1.5 μm.

Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.

S: On nutrient-rich pebbles and roofing tiles. Known also from Great Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, Svalbard, North America and Antarctica (Magnusson 1929, 1936; Purvis et al. 1992; Nimis 1993; Santesson 1993; Esslinger & Egan 1995; Elvebakk & Hertel 1997; Scholz 2000; Coppins 2002b; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Øvstedal & Lewis Smith 2004).

Acarospora veronensis is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; scattered to contiguous, flat to convex, dark red-brown areola; and 1–3 apothecia per areola.
