Gomphrena celosioides
ζ*Gomphrena celosioides C. Martius ζ*, Gomphrena weed, has been collected wild at Silverdale, N. Auckland. An annual with hairy, elliptic lvs to 4 cm long; infls in the axils of uppermost lf pairs, c. 1 cm diam., almost globular at anthesis, becoming spike-like and c. 2.5 cm long at fruiting; bracts papery and silvery-white; perianth white-woolly outside. The sp. was probably accidentally introduced from Australia where it is known as gomphrena weed. G. globosa L., globe amaranth, is commonly cultivated in warmer parts of the country but is not known to have escaped. This annual is normally taller and has larger infls composed of usually magenta fls. (Brazil, 1959).
