Filipendula ulmaria
ζ*F. ulmaria (L.) Maxim. ζ*, meadow sweet, is sometimes grown as a garden ornamental and has been collected as an escape at Butterfields Beach, Halfmoon Bay, St. An erect, non-tuberous herb up to c. 50 cm high; basal and cauline lvs dark and glabrous on upper surface, whitish green-tomentose on lower, pinnate with 3-5 pairs of large, irregularly 2-serrate or laciniate to pinnatifid leaflets up to c. 60 mm long, often with reduced leaflets at base and between primary leaflets; infl. elongate, up to 25 cm long; fls small; petals 1.5-3-(4) mm long; achenes 2-3 mm long, spirally twisted. N.Z. material is probably referable to subsp. ulmaria which has glabrous achenes, but mature frs have not been seen. (Europe, N. Asia, 1976).
