Sicyos angulata

Stems angled, glab. or nearly so, up to 4 m. or more long, branched above. Lvs on petioles up to ± 10 cm. long; lamina rounded- to ovate-cordate, sinus open; 5-angled or 5-lobed, (5)-10-15-(20) mm. diam.; membr., scabrid with white-based hairs to almost glab.; margins coarsely dentate. Tendrils long, branched, spirally coiled. Fls greenish, up to c. 10 mm. diam.; ♂ in racemes on long peduncles; ♀ clustered on short peduncles. Frs about ovoid, compressed, 8-12 mm. long, beset with barbed spinose bristles.

DIST.: K., Three Kings, N. Coastal to lat. 39° 30', now mainly on islands. Mawhai.

Solander's reference to Totaranui is possibly to the northern locality, not the southern. Our plants deserve further comparison with extra-New Zealand ones.
